When it comes to protecting your identity, you can never be too careful. Just ask the millions of Americans who may have been affected by the recent Equifax data breach. From mid-May to July 2017, the names, birth dates, addresses, and license, credit card, and Social Security numbers of approximately 143 million people–nearly half of our country’s population–may have been exposed. This is just the latest example of how vulnerable we all are when it comes to identity theft.
What should you do to protect your personal identity? Here are six ways to amp up your I.D. security:
1. Be diligent about protecting your personal information.
When it comes to protecting your identity, trust your gut. Never give out your personal information if the request sounds fishy.
2. Review your credit report annually.
This will help you identify any unusual activity, including new accounts or inquiries. Check your credit report for free every twelve months by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com.
3. Monitor your monthly credit card statements.
If you see any suspicious charges, report them immediately.
4. Regularly change your passwords for online banking.
Changing your passwords for your online banking and other financial accounts will reduce the risk of your moving being moved fraudulently.
5. Set up a free fraud alert.
A fraud alert warns lenders that you may have been a victim of identity theft and advises them to take additional steps in verifying your identity before granting a new line of credit in your name. Fraud alerts can be set from 90 days to 7 years, and can be removed at any time. Sign up with Experian or TransUnion.
7. Sign up with an Identity Theft Protection Company.
TSLNH recently purchased a plan from one of our clients, Nancy Montville of IDShield. We were impressed with her company’s extensive background in protecting individuals and families, as well as how high they stacked up in comparison to others in their industry. IDShield is the only identity theft protection company armed with a team of licensed private investigators on call to restore your identity. Their plans start at just $9.95 a month and they offer individual, family, and business plans. We encourage you to give Nancy a call at (603) 502-4062 or visit her website.
